2025 was the year “commitment” became “verified action.” The ZDHC Roadmap to Zero introduced important updates that shifted the industry from self-reporting to formal, digital validation. For brands, this creates greater trust. For suppliers, it means tighter deadlines and no room for data errors. This article reviews the main ZDHC developments of 2025, examines their impact across the value chain, and shows how CleanChain acts as your central hub to manage everything.
The Evolution of ZDHC in 2025: What’s New?
In 2025, ZDHC focused on digitalisation and simplification, moving away from complex PDF guidelines to a centralised online platform. This new “Suppliers Roadmap to Zero” provides a step-by-step journey for suppliers to implement sustainable chemical management at their own pace. Key updates include:
- Digitalisation of the Roadmap to Zero: A new online platform simplifies the implementation of ZDHC guidelines for suppliers, with dedicated modules for brands and formulators to follow.
- Enhanced InCheck Reporting: Since January 2025, ZDHC Product IDs (PIDs) have been mandatory for new products, making accurate and verified chemical inventory management more critical than ever.
- Streamlined MRSL Conformance: A new API-driven process for ZDHC MRSL conformance, launched in April 2025, automates data exchange between certifiers and the ZDHC Gateway, reducing errors and speeding up verification.
- Evolving Supplier to Zero (StZ) Programme: The StZ program has been updated to better reflect a supplier’s progress and performance in implementing the Roadmap to Zero.
Chemical Inventory: Stricter Validation
The Shift: Since January 2025, ZDHC Product IDs (PIDs) are mandatory for new products while uploading inventory for InCheck report generation. In January 2025, CleanChain updated its monthly inventory upload process to enforce this.
- What Changed: Our system now performs Real-Time Validation during the upload process. If you have uploaded a product in previous inventories, the system detects it automatically. No PID is required unless the product was not present in the previous inventory.
- The Benefit: If a product is missing a PID or has a data gap, you see it instantly. This helps you avoid generating an invalid InCheck report and protects your conformance score. We’ve also included step-by-step instructions on how to upload your inventory correctly and generate your InCheck report.
Our Core Services for Chemical Management:
- Performance InCheck: While ZDHC InCheck Reporting empowers suppliers to showcase sustainable chemical management by tracking input formulations against ZDHC Chemicals to Zero levels, CleanChain enhances this process with tailored tools. We provide suppliers with a user-friendly template for the CIL uploading.
- Verified InCheck (Level 1): Self-reporting isn’t enough. We bundle services with ZDHC-approved verifiers to conduct the required annual on-site spot check.
- Wastewater Testing (ClearStream): In partnership with ZDHC-approved laboratories, we provide comprehensive wastewater testing that conforms to the latest ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines. Our partners ensure accurate sampling and analysis, and the results are uploaded directly to the ZDHC Gateway platform, helping you meet the strict 45-day submission deadline without hassle.
- Supplier to Zero (Level 2): We connect you with ZDHC approved reviewers to validate your implementation, moving you from “Level 1” compliance to “Level 2” leadership.
Wastewater: The New 45-Day “Hard Stop”
The Shift: As of late 2025, ZDHC has introduced a strict 45-day submission window for wastewater test reports.
- The Rule: Approved laboratories must upload test reports to the Gateway within 45 days of the sampling date.
- The Risk: If this window is missed, the Gateway rejects the report. No exceptions. This makes coordination between you, your lab, and the platform critical.
Example Cut-off Dates:
- Reporting Cycle Ends: 31 October → Submission Cut-off: 15 December
- Reporting Cycle Ends: 30 April → Submission Cut-off: 14 June
The CleanChain Solution: CleanChain works with ZDHC-approved laboratories to support brands and suppliers with this requirement.
Air Emissions: The New Frontier
The Shift: In August 2025, ZDHC officially launched the Air Emissions Module. This moves the industry beyond water and chemicals to tracking Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and GHGs.
- The Challenge: This module requires precise data to be extracted from your chemical inventory. Collect information on hazardous ingredients and their CAS numbers, as well as the percentage of each ingredient in each chemical used in production processes. Record the annual consumption (in kg) of each chemical.
The CleanChain Solution: Don’t start from scratch. CleanChain leverages your existing inventory data to support this new module.
- Data Extraction: We support facilities by extracting the required chemical quantities, CAS numbers, and percentage data directly from their existing CleanChain inventory for products with SDS. This simplifies and speeds up their submission for the Air Emissions Module.
